My StoryMy journey to becoming a doula began in 2009, after the unplanned cesarean delivery of my oldest child, K. I felt betrayed by my body and angry about the callous and cold treatment I received at the hospital. I regretted not having worked with a doula to support me and my husband through my labor.
When K was about 6 months old, I had the opportunity to visit with a dear friend who was in midwifery school in El Paso, TX. It was there that I attended my first three births; each unique, unfolding in its own time and manner. Witnessing and aiding these women - who had been strangers to me until the day/night they went into labor - give birth to their babies and to themselves was incredibly healing. More importantly, I witnessed what an environment truly supportive of physiological birth looks like; where a laboring woman is neither rushed nor told what to do and, rather, is empowered with the space and time to make intuitive decisions about her and her baby's needs. My goal as a doula is to share my experience and training with laboring individuals, in order to support each parent and parent-to-be throughout their unique birth journey. |
